Those who suffer from scars know that the unsightly abrasions can cause a loss of confidence. Innovations in scar treatment are happening all the time. Silicone gel sheeting has been clinically proven to help, but there are other techniques that may also work to diminish scars.
One such technique are (is attending? - strange subject/verb thing here) scar massages. Licensed massage therapists are finding that massaging the areas around scars can help in the scar healing process, according to Massage Today.
Elaine Stillerman, who runs a scar massage class, says that massaging keeps the scar tissue flexible and improves elasticity. Since scars are rigid, this elasticity may result in decreasing the (appearance of the) scar. Massages also have the added benefit of reducing itching and discoloration.
Stillerman says the technique is especially useful for c-section scars. Stillerman has found, however, that keloid scars should not be touched and thus focuses her efforts on the areas around them.
Silicone ointments are a useful product when it comes to reducing scars. Silicone naturally interacts with the body's biochemistry, allowing it to effectively mask scars. Since the products come in gel form, it may be effective to combine them with massage techniques to further combat scarring.
