With scars healed, 13-year-old Iraqi boy returns home
In November of 2008, 13-year-old Mohammed approached Army National Guard major David Howell in Iraq and asked him to take him to America and save him.
Howell did just that.
Mohammed was scarred and disfigured after a house fire in his home country of Iraq. The boy's scalp was burnt, leaving only scar tissue, his eye damaged, and his left hand deformed.
Howell arranged for a Michigan doctor to provide five plastic surgeries free of charge. In April of 2009, Howell and Mohammed flew to America.
Over the course of a year, Mohammed underwent the procedures that repaired much of the damage done to him by the house fire. Now, he's headed back home.
Although the surgeries were free, Mohammed still racked up an $18,000 medical bill. An anonymous donor stepped up and paid for the boy.
He also got proper dental care, gained 26 pounds, got glasses, and learned to play baseball.
Although Mohammed still has scars from the surgery and fire, they can be reduced considerably with the use of silicone gel sheeting and ointments.
