Following an unprovoked attack from a trusted coworker, a Canton, Ohio, woman has been left with a zigzag scar across her forehead, The Canton Repository reports.

Emily Higbie was on duty as the night clerk at the Courtyard Marriott when Julian L. Edwards, who had worked an earlier shift, returned and went back into the kitchen area. Edwards, who was considered a friend by Higbie, acted as though he wanted to show her something. When she joined him, he beat her repeatedly with a metal pipe and only stopped when a hotel security guard rushed in to help.

Higbie underwent multiple surgeries to repair her wounds. Although the scar healing process is complete, she can no longer dress herself, participate in softball or play the flute.

"My life has been completely consumed by this. I don't know if my physical pain will ever go away, but the mental pain I feel is permanent," she told Edwards in court, quoted by the news source.

Edwards, who has a troubled past and a history of violence, pleaded guilty to charges of assault.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, approximately 4.3 million nonfatal violent attacks on victims over the age of 12 occurred in 2009.

When such incidents lead to scars, these marks can be reduced through the use of such treatments as silicone ointment.
