Many years after a horrific house fire killed their mother and left them with severe burns, a set of triplets from Fort Worth, Texas have established a foundation to help other burn survivors, Chron.com reports.

Trae, Jordan and Chandra Berns were 17 months old when a suspicious fire killed their mother and placed their father on trial for felony arson. The girls suffered third-degree burns on 45 percent of their bodies and were hospitalized for months. All three survived, but had terrible scars that made them feel self-conscious.

"When we were in elementary school, the other kids knew our story, so things were fine," Trae explained, quoted by the news source. "But once we got to middle school, and then high school, kids would stare, point fingers and whisper things."

Now students at the University of Texas at San Antonio, the sisters had to wear thick makeup and long-sleeved shirts to hide their scars.

They established the Three For Hope Foundation to help offer education, treatment and emotional support to other burn survivors, according to the organization website.

BurnSurvivor.com reports that approximately 2.4 million burn injuries are reported each year in the U.S.

Those who wish to reduce the appearance of their scars may benefit from the use of silicone ointment.
