Steel company employee left with permanent scar after workplace accident
A steel fabrication company in Scotland recently received a hefty fine for unsafe work practices that resulted in the severe injury of a 50-year-old employee, Edinburgh Evening News reports.
Iain Sutherland was working underneath a suspended steel plate when it fell on him. The plate, which weighed more than two tons, broke his right forearm and fingers. Only a month before the incident, the site had been inspected by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) agency, which had emphasized the importance of training workers to properly use the lifting equipment.
Sutherland now suffers from a constant ache in his arm, which is permanently scarred, and he can no longer lift heavy objects or play the racquet sports that he once enjoyed.
"This was a serious and entirely preventable accident that has left Mr. Sutherland with lasting pain and discomfort, and affected his quality of life," said HSE inspector Kerry Cringan, quoted by the news source.
According to the HSE website, an estimated 223,000 work-related injuries were reported in the UK last year. Individuals who experience scarring as a result of such traumatic incidents may benefit from the use of silicone ointment, which may help improve the appearance of such unsightly marks.
