A 31-year-old man who was robbed and attacked with a glass bottle in Glasgow, UK, has sustained permanent facial scars from the incident, according to the Evening Times.

The victim was walking home alone when he was approached by two men. The attackers demanded money from him and when he refused, they struck him multiple times with a glass bottle before running away. The victim was later rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

"This was an appalling attack on the victim, who is in a terrible state in hospital," said Detective Sergeant Jackie Ferrie, quoted by the news source. "The suspects, not content with just trying to steal his money, have inflicted terrible injuries on him, and he will most definitely be left with permanent scarring."

The police are conducting a door-to-door investigation and examining security camera footage in an attempt to identify the attackers.

According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, simple assault is the most frequently occurring violent crime, and that 2.9 million cases were reported in 2009.

Victims who have been left with scars may wish to decrease the appearance of their marks through the use of silicone ointment.
