With players participating in intensely physical competitions like professional rugby, one might expect their bodies to bear signs of their demanding profession. For New Zealand All Black's legend Jonah Lomu, his trauma scars come less from his play on the field and more from his early life growing up on the street.

In a recent interview with British newspaper The Observer, the 37-year-old Auckland native spoke widely about his numerous scars and the stories behind them. Most memorable, however, are the wounds received from his days as a troubled teen fighting in the streets of the Kiwi capital.

Lomu attributes his famously mutilated thumb to an incident in which the digit became infected when punctured by the bone of an opponent in a street fight – and its far from the only mark left from this period in his life.

"I have a stab wound on my left hip and one on my thigh and a slash mark across my right calf. I have a bottle stab wound on my left calf," he told the newspaper.

The star player also bears scars from a recent kidney transplant that saved his life.

Though Lomu has moved on from a life of violence, the scars still remain. For patients hoping to reduce the appearance of trauma scars, treatments like silicone gel sheeting may be the ideal way to hide the wounds of the past.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19709243-ADNFCR
