Having earned a decisive victory just 18 seconds into his debut bout, Lavar Johnson was a quickly-rising star in the MMA outlet Strikeforce's heavyweight division. All of that nearly came to an end last independence day when the 32-year-old fighter was shot three times while standing outside of a family reunion.

"My stomach felt real nasty and I couldn't move," Johnson recalls in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "I didn't know how serious it was until I was in the ambulance. That's when I asked the EMTs, 'Will I be ok?' And he said, 'I don't know. It's pretty bad.'"

The bullets tore through Johnson's gut, hip and forearm requiring the 6'4", 245 pounder to undergo a series of surgeries in which doctors spliced his intestines in six places, removed his appendix, repaired his colon and sewed his stomach closed. The incident left him with a massive surgical scar that runs the length of his torso and three trauma scars from the bullets themselves.

Surgery patients like Johnson can reduce the appearance of topical scars through the use of silicone ointments, something that the fighter might consider as he's eager to once again be thought of as "the fighter who knocks people out" rather than the one who got shot.ADNFCR-3015-ID-19692753-ADNFCR
