A riot in a Middle Eastern village has left a six-year-old girl with permanent scars from scalding hot water, which she accidentally spilled on herself when bombs startled her, according to the Mineola Patch.

Nebal Hani al Shamali sustained fourth degree burns when the bombings occurred in January 2009 in her home village, Rafah, which is near the Egyptian border. The child ran into a tea kettle, spilling hot water all over herself that resulted in burns down to the bone.

Physicians from Doctors Without Borders sought help from Mission: Restore, a nonprofit organization based in Long Island, New York, that tried to send clinicians to help. However, the doctors were unable to obtain visas, and al Shamali's family traveled for six days to get to the U.S. for treatment.

"She's phenomenal," said surgeon Kaveh Alizadeh of the patient, quoted by the news source. "The objective of our group is to show that there is still American goodwill and expertise that can be shared with the rest of the world."

Of burn victims who are hospitalized, almost one-third suffer from major burns that involve at least 25 percent of their body surface.

Silicone ointment may be an effective way of reducing the appearance of burn scars.
