Meth lab explosion leaves baby girl with severe facial and body scars
A Florida man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for operating a meth lab that recently exploded, an event which severely burned his infant daughter, WJHG.com reports.
John Osborn was found guilty of possession of a chemical with the intent to manufacture meth, in addition to aggravated child abuse. On the final day of his trial, his daughter was brought into the courtroom, where the jury saw the severe scars left on her face from the third degree burns she had suffered.
"She had to have speech therapy. She takes physical therapy," said Pam Busbee, the child's grandmother, quoted by the source. "They're real concerned about her left arm and her left hand."
Judge Deedee Costello did not permit Osborn to look at his daughter. He wiped tears away as the scarred child was carried back out of the courtroom.
Prosecuting attorney Tracy Smith felt that the maximum penalty was well deserved. She said that "justice was served for little baby Johanna today," quoted by the source.
The Center for Injury Research and Policy estimates that there are approximately 10,000 pediatric burn injuries in the U.S. each year. Children who are left with scars may use silicone gel sheeting to reduce the appearance of these marks.
