More than three decades ago, a small boy fell into a bathtub of boiling water, according to the Whangarei Leader. The incident left Martin Lotscher, now 43 years of age, with permanent physical and emotional scars.

"I didn't cry, I didn't scream. I think it was the shock," he confessed to the news source.

The accident burned his back, right side, feet and arms. Although common procedure at the time was to pour oil on severe burns, Lotscher was fortunate to have an aunt trained in first aid. She put cold water on him before taking him to the hospital, which was an agonizing experience due to the crude methods that the staff used to deal with severe burns.

"I don't blame them," he said, according to the news source. "I think they did their best how they knew it, but I had years of nightmares because this experience was in me."

Lotscher now lives in New Zealand, where he is involved with fundraising to improve scar treatment for others with similar injuries.

Hot water scalds are responsible for more than two-thirds of emergency room visits, according to BurnSurvivor.com.

Those who are scarred by burns from hot liquid may benefit from the use of silicone ointment.
