Chuck Anderson writes for TES Magazine that he was swimming off the coast of Alabama, training for a triathlon, when he was suddenly struck by an eight-foot long bull shark. The force of the blow sent him straight out of the water.

When he landed, Anderson saw the bull shark coming at him again and he put his hands in front of it. The animal bit into his right hand, chewing off four fingers, and then into his stomach, leaving a scar that was two-and-a-half inches deep.

The shark then snapped down onto his arm and dragged him 15 feet underwater, where it went into a feeding frenzy. After that, it pushed him straight toward the beach, where Anderson washed ashore.

After several days of being in an induced coma and a fever, Anderson recovered and was out of the hospital in just over two weeks. He completed his first triathlon nine months later.

The Florida Museum of Natural History estimates that there are 50 to 70 shark attacks every year around the world.

Those who have scars stemming from a traumatic attack may want to consider silicone ointment, which can help heal marks so that they eventually disappear.
