Kansas teen sentenced to nine years in prison for drunk driving accident
An Olathe, Kansas, teenager has been sentenced to nine years in prison after killing two of his friends in a drunk driving accident, The Kansas City Star reports.
Benjamin Denham, 19, had a blood alcohol level that was almost twice the legal limit when he lost control of his Cadillac, which he had been driving at over 100 miles an hour. The car crashed, rolled and caught on fire, killing his two friends. Denham was rescued from the burning wreck by a man who had witnessed the accident.
"The grace that has been extended to Benjamin Denham is that he is alive today," said assistant prosecutor Jill Kenney, quoted by the news source. "He didn't even want me to put forth a defense. He said, 'I own this, I'm going to take responsibility for this.'"
The teenager has been left with permanent scars after undergoing multiple surgeries for his injuries.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving reports that one in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash in their lifetime.
Those who have sustained injuries from such accidents may be able to reduce the appearance of their scars through the use of silicone gel sheeting.
