Holiday party brings together pediatric burn victims
A fire station in Camillus, New York, recently hosted an overnight holiday party for 12 child burn survivors, Syracuse.com reports.
One of the attendees was 12-year-old Arianna Fedroff, who had suffered serious burns on her face and body in an apartment fire when she was just two. Doctors predicted that the little girl only had a 20 percent chance of surviving, and that if she did, she would most likely suffer from brain damage and be unable to walk.
"She done proved them wrong. She really did," said her mother, Mimi Graham, quoted by the news source.
According to party organizer Kelly Reed, who also works as a nurse at the local hospital's burn unit, the holiday gathering gave kids a chance to forget about their scars.
Arianna said that she enjoyed being with the other kids because they all had similar experiences and no one was there to make fun of them.
BurnSurvivor.com reports that there are approximately 10,000 pediatric burn injuries reported in the U.S. each year.
Children who have suffered from burns may benefit from the use of silicone ointment, which can reduce the appearance of scars.
