Girl's leg is permanently scarred after being run over by a car
A Glasglow, Scotland, teenager who ran over his girlfriend's leg with his car has been released on bail, STV News reports.
Ashley McCann was approaching boyfriend Andrew Spence's car on the passenger side when he set the vehicle in reverse, knocking her to the ground. One of the wheels ran over her left leg, and she was rushed to the hospital for surgery. Although the operation successfully corrected the fracture, McCann has been left with permanent scars.
"It was thought at that time that [the accident] could have threatened the limb, but she made a full recovery aside from permanent scarring," said prosecutor Laura Greer, quoted by the media outlet. "She remained in the hospital for two weeks."
According to officials, it remains unclear whether Spence could have seen his girlfriend approaching from behind the car. The teen's sentence has been deferred due to the need for further investigation.
Car crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the U.S. and account for more than one in three deaths among this group, according to the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention.
Victims who have been left with scars may be able to reduce the appearance of these marks through the use of silicone gel sheeting.
