A day out at the carnival ended in an alcohol-fueled attack that left one UK woman with permanent facial scars, according to the Sunderland Echo.

Kelly Poad, Kerry O'Connor and Victoria Arnold had taken their children out to enjoy the town's annual fair when a visibly intoxicated Poad - who had consumed eight cans of lager before the incident - lashed out at O'Connor. She threw a plastic glass at her friend before throwing punches as the children looked on.

O'Connor was left with a reddened facial scar, in addition to bruises on her arms and legs. Her attacker, who has a history of psychological problems, has pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

"It really is a case of one woman who has trouble with alcohol and has snapped," explained attorney Stuart Graham, quoted by the news source. "She was silly, but cannot turn the clock back now. She is now working with the authorities and has a support worker."

The National Crime Victimization Survey found that an estimated 4.3 million nonfatal violent victimizations occurred in 2009.

In such incidents, silicone gel sheeting may be the scar treatment of choice for victims who have been left with marks.
