Firefighter left with terrible facial scars after gas explosion
A courageous firefighter who responded to a major gas leak in Tamahere, New Zealand has been left with severe scars on his face and scalp, the NZ Herald reports.
In an explosion that killed one of his colleagues, David Beanland received injuries that turned him into "a piece of charred meat," he described himself, quoted by the news source. "I asked for medium rare, but I got well done."
The 47-year-old's sense of humor has served him well through a total of 19 delicate reconstructive surgeries and skin grafts. He has had to have a new left earlobe crafted to replace the one he lost in the fire.
The blast scorched more than two-thirds of his face and scalp, incinerating almost all of his hair. He also sustained severe damage to one of his fingers, which doctors had to amputate.
BurnSurvivor.com reports that more than 2.4 million burn injuries are reported each year. Of these, 20,000 are major burns that often involve at least 25 percent of the victim's total body surface.
Those who acquire severe burn scars may turn to silicone gel sheeting to lessen the appearance of these marks.
