An 11-year-old boy has been left with permanent scars on his chest and back after suffering abuse at the hands of his father, TCPalm reports.

Tyshaun Mills, 30, of Florida has been charged with aggravated child abuse after a police officer saw scars on his son's upper and middle back. The officer also reported seeing a "small laceration type scar" on the child's upper left chest, according to the news source.

The boy told hometown police that the wounds had been sustained from being hit with his father's belt. Mills would whip the child five or six times as punishment for getting poor grades or for not keeping up with his household chores.

Mills, who claimed that the last beating took place in late November or early December, was arrested last week on a felony charge.

According to the nonprofit organization ChildHelp, more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the U.S. Approximately 68 percent of these children are abused by family members.

Treatment options such as silicone ointment may be able to reduce the appearance of marks during the scar healing process.
