Drinking and driving should never mix, as one New Zealand couple discovered after a traumatic accident that left one of them scarred and legally blind, The Press reports.

On a spring night in 2006, Paul and Jillian Campbell had an argument over who should drive home, despite the fact that both were considerably intoxicated after a night of dancing and socializing at the local bars. He won and slipped behind the wheel, speeding through the dark, rainy streets to their home. He failed to see an unlit parked truck until he collided with it.

"I didn't even know what I had hit. Shock took over," Campbell told the news source. "I looked left and asked [Jillian if she] was okay. Whatever I saw, I can't get it back. They say it's the trauma."

His wife was rushed to the hospital, where medical staff - two of whom fainted upon seeing her injuries - fought to keep her alive.

After a 14-hour operation, during which part of her pre-frontal cortex was removed and 164 titanium screws were placed in her brain, Jillian survived. The scar healing process, in addition to her lost vision and locked jaw, are evidence of the incident.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, an estimated one in three people will be involved in an alcohol-related crash during their lifetime.
