A car crash left 20-year-old Amber McKinney with a permanent scar from her left temple to the top of her nose, WFAA-TV Dallas/Fort Worth reports. However, the scar was the least of her problems. McKinney suffered a severe head injury during which her skull separated from her spinal column, a medical condition known as an atlanto-occipital dislocation.

The accident left her unable to talk or walk, but through intensive physical therapy at the Baylor Institute for Rehabilitation, she has begun regaining control of her body.

"I can't believe I was supposed to die," McKinney told the news source. "I've had like a lot of people that have cried and stuff. But I'm making it, I'm doing good."

According to doctors, her quick recovery bodes well for the future, as previous research has shown that this indicates that a patient may completely heal.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that in 2009, a total of 30,797 fatal car accidents occurred.

For fortunate survivors who have sustained scars from such incidents, the use of silicone gel sheeting may be an effective method of treatment.
