Car accident leaves man with cocklebur embedded in his left arm
Although it may be relatively common for severe injuries to be treated with surgery, one Texas man required a unique operation unheard of by any of his doctors, the Times Record News reports.
Justin Martin was driving down a rural road when he was forced to swerve to avoid a stray cow. He lost control of the vehicle and was ejected, suffering a broken pelvis, torn ligaments and a foot-long gash on his left arm as a result.
After undergoing a series of operations, he was beginning to reocover when a painful lump formed on the scar on his left arm. The baffled doctors performed a biopsy and discovered that a plant, known as a cocklebur, had embedded itself in Martin's arm during the accident.
The cocklebur had migrated inches away from where it had entered and had begun sprouting roots.
"The doctors in the room had a total of 100 years of experience and none of them had ever seen anything like what they found," Martin told the news source.
An estimated three million people are injured in the U.S. each year, according to Car-Accidents.com.
The appearance of scars that have been sustained from these incidents may be reduced through the application of silicone gel sheeting.
