When Elaine Cogswell was three years old, she was badly burned in a freak accident while playing with her sister outside.

The two young girls were running around with curtains on their heads while their uncle was burning a pile of leaves. Cogswell was too close to the pile and the curtain caught fire, pulling her into the heap. She was badly burned on her head and neck and rushed to the hospital.

She has undergone more than 35 surgeries to help reconstruct her face and help heal her burn scars. Although she as once very sheltered, she has come into her own and embraced happiness. She has found someone who truly cares about her and focuses on the task at hand.

"She is going out into the world every day, and she's doing her job, and so I think that's what she's showing other people," friend Paula Oberg told the news source. "That she is being judged by what she does and who she is, not her disfigurement."

Burn scar victims may find benefits in the use of silicone gel sheeting, which may help reduce the appearance of the marks over time.
