Burn scars cause trouble for Florida
A Melbourne couple is facing charges of child neglect with permanent disfigurement after social workers with the Florida Department of Children and Families contacted police about sizable burn scars on the back of a five-year-old developmentally challenged girl.
In February, Loriel Sturn had taken her young daughter to the emergency room for treatment of swollen legs, at which point doctors treating the child noticed the severe burn scars covering the child's back and buttocks, according to Florida Today.
The scars were allegedly caused when the child, who suffers from a form of dwarfism that leaves her skin prone to keloids, fell on a radiator while the family lived in North Carolina last year. At the time, Sturn rushed to the pharmacy and purchased burn ointment and over-the-counter narcotics, claims Melbourne police commander Ron Bell.
Sturm later confided to police that she and her husband had not taken the girl to a doctor at the time for fear that the child would be removed from their custody.
Sturm may have been able to reduce the appearance of the scars through treatments like silicone gel sheeting.
The couple denies neglecting the child and will go before a judge in April.
