Baby is left with permanent scars after scalding bath
A mother from Peoria, Illinois, will spend 15 years in prison after endangering the life of her infant son, the Chicago Tribune reports.
Jessica Hall received the sentence after leaving her four-month-old boy in a scalding tub of hot water. The baby received burns to more than 30 percent of his body and sustained permanent scars from the incident.
According to prosecutors, Hall left the baby in the bathtub for up to two minutes before she finally realized that the water was too hot. She pulled him out when she saw that the child's skin appeared to be "melting" off, but did not seek medical help for two days.
Hall apologized for the incident at her hearing, informing the judge that she loved her baby.
The Burn Survivor Resource Center reports that at least 50 percent of all burn accidents could have been prevented. Children who are younger than the age of two account for half of all kids who are hospitalized with burn injuries.
Victims may find that silicone gel sheeting helps lessen the appearance of their burn scars.
