Australian tourist survives shark attack
A 58-year-old tourist from Victoria, Australia, was snorkeling on the coast of Exmouth when he was attacked by a shark, according to the Brisbane Times.
He and his wife were swimming approximately 100 feet away from the shoreline of Cape Range National Park when he felt a bump on his arm. He then realized that he had been bitten on his right elbow, although it is unclear what species of shark attacked him.
The tourist and his wife made their own way to the hospital for treatment, where he received 50 stitches to repair the wound. Officials have placed warning signs on the remote beach where the attack occurred to warn other swimmers of the potential danger.
According to the International Shark Attack File, a total of 79 attacks were reported around the world in 2010. Of these incidents, only six resulted in the victim's death.
Those who survive a shark attack and wish to reduce the appearance of any scars may turn to silicone gel sheeting. This method of scar treatment may help lessen the severity of these marks.
