Steven Turnbull was walking home from his girlfriend's house one night when three individuals assaulted him. He was punched and kicked, and his wallet was stolen.
"I noticed three lads on the path and thought nothing of it really," he told the news source. "Then, when I was walking through the subway, they came from behind and pushed me to the floor. They started swearing and threatening me, asking for my mobile phone."
One of the men took a knife and gashed the left side of Turnbull's face. They then took his phone and his wallet, which contained money to buy clothes for his young son.
Turnbull returned to his girlfriend's house, where an ambulance rushed him to Sunderland Royal Hospital. Although he was released immediately, he confessed that he has had trouble sleeping since the incident.
