Abuse from mom's boyfriend leaves child with permanent scars
A little boy has received permanent scars after being burned with cigarettes by his mother's boyfriend, the Star Tribune reports.
Marcus W. Bissonette, 27, had allegedly been abusing both his girlfriend and her child for over two months. He burned the boy with lit cigarettes, punched him and pushed him into a kitchen counter, splitting and scarring his forehead.
The mother has since filed for two counts of malicious punishment of a child at the Ramsey County District Court. An examination of the boy revealed burn marks on his left shoulder in addition to the injury on his head.
"Marcus has been hurting me," the child told the police, quoted by the news source. "Marcus burned me with cigarettes."
According to Child Help, more than 3 million reports of child abuse are made each year in the U.S. Approximately 5.8 million kids were involved in about 3.2 million allegations of abuse in 2007.
Victims who have been left with permanent scars may turn to silicone gel sheeting as a way to lessen the appearance of these marks.
