Patients seem prefer silicone breast implants

Dr Michael Fiorillo, a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon in New York City, has noticed more patients opting for new FDA approved silicone implants.

Silicone implants were banned in 1992 due to health concerns, but were re-approved in 2006 after the FDA reevaluated the benefits. Since then, many patients have found that silicone implants offer a more natural look and feel, compared to saline implants.

"Over the past few years, silicone breast implants have certainly become the implant of choice for many of my patients," said Dr Fiorillo. "Since their FDA-approval, silicone implants have provided higher satisfaction rates among patients."

Silicone breast implants tend to retain their shape better than saline implants, which have the potential to warp. Silicone implants also have a softer feel, helping to provide the more natural appearance.

It is recommended that patients considering a cosmetic procedure consult their plastic surgeon first to determine which option will best suit them before going under the knife.

Patients should also know the pros and cons to each procedure. Some surgeries may leaving scarring, but the use of scar treatment products such as silicone gel sheeting or ointment may help reduce the appearance of the marks.
