Natural breast augmentation is a scar-free alternative, experts say

A plastic surgery practice based in Connecticut is promoting the use of natural breast augmentation as a natural, scar-free alternative to silicone breast implants, WTNH News reports.

This process involves the use of water-assisted, or micro-cannular, liposuction to obtain high-quality fat tissue and stem cells from other parts of the body. These components are then used to augment the volume of the breasts but may also be used for the face and the buttocks.

According to physicians, this procedure provides a more natural look, due to the fact that the patient's own fat tissue is being used. Additionally, the presence of stem cells may more readily support the grafted tissue by forming new blood vessels, according to the news source.

American Health and Beauty reports that studies have supported the use of natural breast augmentation, as the procedure has not been significantly linked to the development, metastasis or recurrence of breast cancer.

"There is increased patient and physician demand for [these] technologies and this review supports our view that fat grafting techniques are safe in the breast," said expert Christopher Calhoun, quoted by the news source.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly 11 million cosmetic surgeries were performed in the U.S. in 2006, among which breast augmentation was the leading procedure.
