Five Daily Habits for Healthy Skin | Biodermis.com

Even if you are blessed with incredible genetics and have always had flawless skin, chances are you will run into problems with your skin at some point in your life. These problems can range from mild to severe depending on the underlying cause and may or may not require a trip to a dermatologist. Conditions such as acne or eczema can be mild, but in some cases they can cause much discomfort and provoke anxiety. Other conditions, such as skin cancer, require examination by a doctor who will perform a procedure to remove the affected area from the skin.

Skin issues are inevitable and are often brought on during our adolescent years and as we get older. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t steps that we can take to ensure our skin looks vibrant and healthy throughout the day. If we take proper care, we may even be able to prevent, or at least reduce, some of the more severe issues that come about as we age.

In this article we will explore some of the daily habits that you can start doing right now to help your skin glow and to minimize the risk for a variety of skin problems.

A healthy and well-balanced diet

Our skin is made up of over 1.5 trillion skill cells. Each day, the skin sheds close to a million of those cells and replaces them will new ones. The cells that make up our body are able to survive through the food and nutrients that we consume. The ability of our cells to perform optimally is only possible if we eat a healthy and nutritious diet. Such a diet will consist of fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Vitamins can also be used in conjunction with healthy meals for even more added benefits. A diet loaded with greasy fast food or foods loaded with sugar can cause your skin to become oiler, leading to acne breakouts. In addition to eating healthy food, drinking lots of water every day can help keep your skin hydrated and strong.

Have a skin care routine

A skin care routine involves the daily practice of cleansing your skin and applying toners and moisturizers to balance the skin’s nutrient and pH levels. Finding the perfect skin care routine for you can take some time as you will have to explore which products work best for your skin type. You don’t want to use products that leave your skin feeling too oily or dry as this can lead to other unwanted side effects. A skin care regimen usually calls for a routine to be practiced twice daily, once in the morning when you wake up and again at night before bed.

Use Sunscreen

You’ve probably been told for years to wear sunscreen when you go outside. This is because the Sun’s harsh UV (ultraviolet rays) can have damaging effects on the skin. Prolonged exposure to the Sun can cause sunburn, hyperpigmentation (dark patches on the skin), and skin cancer. Even if you don’t live in a particularly hot climate, UV rays can still penetrate the surface of the skin and cause damage. Sunscreens come in two types: chemical and physical. Each type has its pros and cons so you should do some research before choosing which is best for you. Most dermatologists recommend using an SPF 30 or higher to block out the sun’s damaging rays.

Take care of your wounds

Wound care is an important part of taking care of your skin and making sure it retains its integrity, but not everyone is aware of best practices. A fresh wound needs to be gently rinsed with running water and a mild soap. This helps to remove any dirt or germs that made their way inside. Once the wound is clean and patted dry, an antimicrobial ointment can be applied before wrapping it in a bandage. Keeping your wound clean and protected by a bandage can prevent infection and it will allow the skin to heal more rapidly. Wounds that aren’t tended to properly are at higher risk of scarring.

Get a good night’s sleep

It’s easy to tell when someone hasn’t gotten enough sleep because you can see it in their skin: puffy eyes and dark circles. There is also some evidence to believe that sleep allows the skin to rejuvenate itself—collagen production rises and cell damage reverses. Not everything is known about how sleep benefits the skin or the body in general, but we do know that if we don’t get enough, we won’t look our best.
