Feb 03, 2010: Popular surgery techniques focus on minimizing scars

A single-incision gallbladder surgery is putting to ease patients who are concerned with long recovery periods and scar treatment.

Before developments in laparoscopic surgery, patients undergoing the gallbladder operation usually left the hospital with a large scar, several inches long, after a lengthy stay, the Morgantown News Herald reports.

The use of cameras to direct a surgeon's maneuvers has allowed for smaller incisions during surgery (some only millimeters in width), fewer problems with scar healing and a significant reduction in recovery time.

Amy Green, a hair salon owner in Lenoir, North Carolina, recently underwent the less invasive gallbladder surgery, and was pleased with the results.

She told the news source, "The only scar I have is hidden in my navel."

Dr Alan Jacks, the surgeon at Valdese Hospital who performed the procedure on Green, added, "The latest thought in all areas of surgery is to be less invasive with fewer incisions for less trauma to the body."

In addition to laparoscopic surgery, some doctors advice treating trauma scars by using silicone products that can reduce the production of scar tissue when applied directly to the affected area.
