Mesh liner, silicone scar treatment may improve breast augmentation surgery

Researchers are currently developing a silk mesh product that may make breast augmentation more attractive by promising to keep breast implants properly placed.

The commercial healthcare and pharmaceutical company Allergan has been engineering the biodegradable mesh to offset the somewhat common problem of saline implants that shift their position over time, the Orange County Register reports.

According to Dr Lavinia Chong, a plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, California, skin along typically can't keep implants in the desired position.

The mesh will be made out of a material called SeriScaffold, which received FDA approval for use in skin grafting, reconstructive surgery and breast augmentation in 2008.

Allergan spokeswoman Caroline Van Hove told the news source, "The technology represents the first silk-based medical device cleared by the FDA."

She added, "[SeriScaffold] is another example of our intent to further develop our leadership and expertise in breast aesthetics and reconstruction."

Other methods to improve breast augmentation surgery include using products such as silicone gel sheeting, which can help reduce the appearance of breast augmentation scars after the procedure.
