Chicago plastic surgeon concerned with scar treatment

A plastic surgeon operating in Chicago, Illinois, has developed a new method for performing rhinoplasty that limits side effects such as infections, thinning of the skin and facial scars.

While most nose jobs are performed using artificial materials such as the medical grade plastic silastic, Dr Dean Toriumi of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Illinois said that using organic cartilage can reduce the appearance of surgery scars and other unwelcomed surgical complications.

"I use, almost exclusively, rib cartilage for augmenting the nose. If there's an opportunity to use a patient's own tissue, there's no reason to place an artificial implant," said Toriumi.

With a sensitivity to how scars can become large and unsightly, Toriumi conducts the rhinoplasty by making an incision measuring less than two centimeters on the patient's chest to extract rib cartilage.

"I've found that my patients who undergo rib cartilage grafting have minimal pain and scarring," said the surgeon.

Other scar treatment options include applying a silicone gel sheeting or ointment to the surgical scar during the first two weeks after the procedure, which has been found to prevent keloid formation in some patients.
