Doctors have reported success in a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to counteract craniosynostosis, a condition that occurs in about one out of every 2,000 infants, while minimizing the appearance of facial scaring.

Craniosynostosis is a congenital defect that causes the gaps between bones in a baby's cranium to close earlier than normal, often creating a head that is slightly pointed or football-shaped.

One-year-old Jack Truitt was a recent patient of the new procedure, in which doctors removed the fused piece of bone at the top of the skull through two small incisions, NBC affiliate WNDU reports.

His father, Steve, had the same procedure done when he was 3 months old.
The father told the news source, "The difference between my scar and his is night and day."

According to the National Institutes of Health, the appearance of thick or discolored wounds can be reduced through scar treatments like surgical revision, dermabrasion, injections and silicone ointments.

Silicone scar treatments have been used by plastic surgeons in burn centers and have been clinically proven to reduce the appearance of unsightly scar tissue.
